Background
In a media market which includes data-led giants such as Facebook and Google, along with telecommunications and media players such as Virgin, Sky, and Eir, it is critical that Broadcasters adopt and make the most of a data-driven culture. They are competing with organisations who have strong data strategies, know their audience and can optimise their content and delivery.
To survive and thrive in this environment broadcasters must transform to gain a granular understanding of individual audience members, driving content creation and delivery choices, and extracting the maximum commercial audience value.
A well-known broadcaster commissioned iSquared to help develop a Data Strategy for the business. The key objectives were to maintain and build audience, grow commercial revenues and deliver an enhanced experience.
Approach
Working in close partnership with cross-functional teams, iSquared used a structured approach, including:
- Stakeholder Interviews: Uncovered critical needs for cultural adoption, unified data practices, and personalisation
- Data Maturity Assessment: Identified strengths and gaps in technology, analytics, and data culture
- Inspiration & Ideation Workshop: A cross-functional workshop including decision makers and knowledge workers, focussing on showcasing leading examples of techniques and success stories to drive inspiration followed by a hands on brainstorming session to build solutions to identified challenges
Outcome
In partnership iSquared and the broadcaster developed a detailed Data Value map which included a broad range of workstreams spread across categories including Internal Efficiency, Content & Creative Support, Commercial Growth and Marketing.
Within these were a number of prioritised projects of which four were identified as priorities and detailed business cases were developed including the data value proposition, resourcing, tools and techniques, and critically the projected return on investment.
